In a significant step for offroad enthusiasts, Sweetwater County commissioners have voiced strong support for an initiative to connect offroad trails across western Wyoming. Spearheaded by Southwest Wyoming Off-road Trails (SWOT), this project aims to boost local tourism and economy by creating an extensive network of motorized trails.
The Vision of SWOT
Mark Tesoro, President of SWOT, presented the ambitious plan to the Sweetwater County commissioners, highlighting the economic benefits of the initiative. By connecting towns and key locations through motorized trails, SWOT aims to attract visitors and offroad enthusiasts to the region.
Expansion and Support
The project, initially envisioned to connect Evanston, Bridger Valley, and Kemmerer, has since expanded statewide. In 2022 and 2023, several towns approved ordinances allowing offroad vehicles on city streets, facilitating access to local amenities for trail users. Tesoro likens the modern ATV experience to “boating on dirt,” emphasizing its family-friendly nature.
Legislative Milestones
Two significant bills passed in 2023 bolstered the initiative: House Bill 42, granting right-of-way access from state highways to communities, and Senate File 17, focusing on offroad vehicle safety. Both bills received Gov. Mark Gordon’s endorsement.
Economic Potential
Referencing Utah’s Garfield County, Tesoro pointed out the considerable economic impact offroad trails can have, with ATV enthusiasts contributing over $33 million to the county.
Challenges and Opportunities
Gene Legerski, Sweetwater County’s public works director, noted challenges in route planning across the Green River and limited county road connections. However, with House Bill 42’s passage, new opportunities for route access have emerged.
Commissioners’ Support
The commissioners, led by Chairman Keaton West, expressed enthusiasm for the project and requested a resolution to integrate county roads with SWOT’s trails, seeing it as a valuable opportunity for growth.
