In off-roading, the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) presents both opportunities and challenges. Traditional internal combustion engine vehicles have long relied on complex gearing systems to navigate the rugged and unpredictable terrain off-roaders love. However, the shift to electric power has introduced a new set of parameters—namely, how to maintain high torque for those demanding off-road conditions without compromising on-road efficiency. This is where Jeep steps in, with a groundbreaking approach that could redefine electric off-road capabilities.
The Innovation Behind the Wheel
Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, recently filed a patent that could be a game-changer for future Jeep electric vehicles. The patent introduces a specialized gearbox designed to enhance the off-road performance of electric vehicles without sacrificing their on-road capabilities.

Understanding the Gearbox
At the heart of this technology lies a dual-speed gearbox, a departure from the single-speed gearboxes typically found in EVs. This two-speed functionality allows for a high-speed gear optimized for on-road driving and a low-speed gear designed for offroad challenges. Including twin planetary gear sets with independent clutches enables precise torque distribution to the axles, enhancing the vehicle’s agility and control over rugged terrains.
A Closer Look at the Gear Ratios
For offroad enthusiasts, the low-speed gear mode is where the magic happens. With a 3:1 reduction ratio, the gearbox delivers the high torque necessary for climbing steep inclines and maneuvering through rough landscapes. On the flip side, the high-speed gear mode operates at a 1:1 ratio, perfect for efficient highway driving.
Why It Matters
Introducing this gearbox by Jeep is a significant step forward in the evolution of electric off-roading. We’ll see if Jeep can deliver on its promise to deliver the best of both worlds: the thrill of offroad adventure with the environmental benefits of electric power by enabling electric vehicles to perform exceptionally in offroad conditions without compromising on-road performance.
