Moab, Utah, has recently been crowned as one of the most welcoming places on Earth by Booking.com, ranking impressively at number six out of ten globally. This accolade highlights Moab’s charming ambiance, red rock formations, and the adventurous spirit that the city embodies.
However, as off-roaders and outdoor enthusiasts who frequent this desert paradise, we find ourselves at a crossroads of opinion. While Moab’s natural beauty and community spirit are undeniable, the growing restrictions and closures present a starkly different narrative for those who cherish the freedom of off-roading.

Beyond the Rankings
Moab’s allure for the off-roading community has been undeniable. The city serves as a gateway to some of the most iconic and challenging terrains in the United States. Yet, the recent accolades overlook an essential aspect of Moab’s appeal—the access to its vast landscapes. As Booking.com and other mainstream outlets celebrate Moab’s welcoming nature, they inadvertently gloss over the increasing limitations placed on offroad trails and areas previously open for exploration.
The Impact of Closures on Off-Roaders
The closures in Moab and surrounding areas have sparked significant concern within the off-roading community, which we talked about with Ben Burr from the Blue Ribbon Coalition. These restrictions limit access and signal a shift in how outdoor activities are perceived and managed. While the claimed intentions behind these closures—to preserve natural beauty and ensure safety—are understandable, they also challenge the essence of off-roading: the freedom to explore untamed landscapes.
Finding a Balance: Conservation and Adventure
The crux of the off-roader’s argument is not against conservation or the efforts to maintain Moab’s stunning environment. Instead, it calls for a balanced approach that recognizes the value of off-roading culture and its economic and social contribution to Moab. The challenge lies in finding the middle ground where conservation efforts and the off-roading community’s interests align, ensuring that Moab remains a welcoming destination for all.
Moab’s Future as an Off-Roading Haven
As Moab continues to be a top spot for visitors, locals and tourists need to talk about what the future should look like for off-roading. Moab has become popular because of outdoor activities, and a big part of that is the people who come here to ride offroad. Ignoring offroad enthusiasts could be a big mistake, as their passion for outdoor adventures is a huge reason why Moab is what it is today.
For Moab to stay welcoming and adventurous, it must ensure off-roaders feel included. This means listening to the off-roading groups asking to care for nature and promote responsible tourism.
Moab should not forget that welcoming everyone who loves the outdoors, including those who love off-roading, has helped make the town great. Turning away from this community could spell the end of the town altogether.
